The commission, in short, is carefully designed for mediocrity.
The best-case scenario is that it will continue to muddle through under the guidance of Merkel and other national leaders who will be pulling the strings.
A worse case would be for Brussels to remain mired in its bureaucracy, out of touch with what Europeans want, and fueling the euro-skepticism that is on the rise in countries that have been victimized by the euro.
